The 283rd Engineer (C) Battalion was fortunate to have had
an accomplished journalist, Lt. Jack R. Ryan, among its
junior officer staff. Lt. Ryan joined the battalion early
in its existence and remained on duty through training,
preparation for embarkation, overseas action and early
post-war assignments. In 1945, after the cessation of
hostilities in Germany, it was Jack's assignment to write
and publish a history of the unit and the men who were
part of it.

The little blue, hardcover book that resulted from that
effort has been Jack's legacy to the men who served with
him, and their children and grandchildren. Jack is gone
now, but in order that the book could be more widely
distributed, in 2000 a new edition was put together through
the efforts of some of the people who are still active with
the 283rd Engineers Association. This Commemorative Edition
is also available as a CD-ROM disc (text and pictures),
which can be purchased for a nominal sum by anyone
interested in the battalion's history of service in France
and Germany during the final stages of World War II. Use
